Opposition presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha stated on Wednesday that, if elected, he will prevent the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

During a discussion with opposition lawmakers from Assam, Sinha criticized the government for its failure to implement the CAA, which he described as being “foolishly drafted” in haste.

Sinha emphasized that citizenship is a significant concern for Assam, and although the government aimed to enforce the Act nationwide, it has not been successful in doing so yet.

He also accused the ruling party of jeopardizing the Constitution, rather than any external threat.

Sinha stressed the importance of the upcoming presidential election as a battle to safeguard the Constitution.

If elected to the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Sinha pledged to prevent the implementation of the CAA.

Sinha explained his decision to leave the BJP in 2018, citing his disagreement with the current leadership’s direction.

He further alleged that the ruling party is undermining various institutions in the country to target opposition figures and destabilize opposition-led state governments.

Sinha criticized the ruling party’s efforts to divide India’s diverse society and transform the country into a one-party state reminiscent of Communist China.

Expressing disappointment in the lack of press conferences by the NDA’s presidential candidate, Sinha emphasized the need for candidates to demonstrate their commitment to the Constitution.

As a former Union minister, Sinha expressed his desire to visit all Northeastern states but urged lawmakers from those states to vote conscientiously due to time constraints.

Following the meeting, Independent MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan endorsed Sinha for the presidency, citing his deep understanding of the country.

MLA Akhil Gogoi announced his support for Sinha, citing grave threats to democracy.

CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Talukdar declared a determination to resist the BJP’s actions, even if faced with challenges.
