Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sharply responded to Home Minister Amit Shah’s comments in the Rajya Sabha targeting Jawaharlal Nehru on the Kashmir issue, stating that the BJP leader lacks historical knowledge and “keeps rewriting” it.

“Pandit Nehru dedicated his life to this country. He was in jail for years. Mr. Shah does not know history. I don’t expect him to know history as he keeps rewriting it,” said Gandhi.

Gandhi also accused the government of trying to distract from the real issue of caste census and participation, and the handling of the country’s finances. “They don’t want to discuss this issue, they are afraid of it and run away from it,” Gandhi told reporters outside Parliament.

Regarding the abrogation of Article 370, the home minister blamed Nehru for accepting the ceasefire brokered by the UN without reclaiming the entire princely state from Pakistani invaders in 1948.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Shah referenced documents from the Prime Minister’s Museum and Society at Teen Murti to show that Nehru himself admitted to his mistake in accepting the ceasefire. He stated that Nehru believed the ceasefire was a good decision at the time, but it should have been delayed.

Earlier, while addressing the Lok Sabha on December 6, Shah claimed that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru made “two blunders” that led to the suffering of Kashmir residents and the loss of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir to Pakistan. He said that if Nehru had taken the right steps, PoK would have been part of India.
