A determined young woman from a traditional family in Haryana, a businessman-turned-producer from Delhi, a talented director from Tamil Nadu, and a renowned director-producer duo from Mumbai are just a few of the diverse individuals who converge at the Film Bazaar. This event, organized by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), is a dynamic and essential part of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).

Despite their differences, these participants are drawn to the Film Bazaar for its vibrancy and productivity. For aspiring filmmakers like the young woman from Haryana, this could be the place where dreams become reality. For businessman-turned-producer Sanjay Gulati, the Bazaar provided a crucial opportunity to enter the world of filmmaking. Director P S Vinothraj, known for his impressive debut film Pebbles (2021), is also present, receiving accolades for his work.

Established filmmakers like Raj and DK, known for successful bazaars in the past, attend as special guests for the closing ceremony. For all attendees – aspiring filmmakers, industry professionals, and enthusiasts alike – the Film Bazaar has been a must-visit section of IFFI since its inception in 2007.

The NFDC, once a leader in India’s parallel cinema movement, had faced a decline until the Film Bazaar breathed new life into the organization. From its humble beginnings, the Bazaar has grown into a bustling four-day event where industry professionals meet, discuss, and network.

The Bazaar serves as a platform for discovering new ideas, projects in various stages of development, and works-in-progress. It is a valuable opportunity to witness the talent of independent filmmakers in India and identify potential breakthrough projects.

Despite the busy schedule, attendees are eager to catch screenings of films generating buzz, such as “Gandhi Talks,” a ‘silent’ film featuring Vijay Sethupathi, Arvind Swamy, and Aditi Rao Hydari with music by A R Rahman. The premiere was a full house, leaving many hopeful for a theatrical release soon.
