Man Arrested for Social Media Post on Hindu Goddess – Religious Sentiments Hurt

A 23-year-old man from Kutch district in Gujarat was arrested in Maharashtra for allegedly offending religious sentiments with an objectionable social media post about a Hindu goddess, as reported by the police on Saturday.

The accused, Bharat Rupani, was apprehended by officials from the Kutch (West) Local Crime Branch (LCB) in Talmod, Maharashtra, after a complaint was filed against him at the Bhuj A-division police station for posting an objectionable picture of goddess Ashapura, a local deity. The complainant stated that the post had offended his religious beliefs, according to an official release.

Rupani was charged under sections 153 (A) (promoting enmity between different groups) and 295 (A) (deliberate and malicious intention of outraging religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code, as confirmed by the LCB.

The LCB Kutch (West) assembled a team to investigate the case, utilizing technical surveillance and human intelligence to locate the accused, who hailed from Lakhpat taluka of Kutch district and was residing at the Talmod border in neighboring Maharashtra.

The accused was apprehended and handed over to the Bhuj A-division police station, where he was arrested on Friday.

Further investigation into the matter was ongoing, as stated in the release.
