A skirmish erupted between militants and security forces on Sunday in South Kashmir’s Anantnag during a search operation in a forested area. Police sources reported that a militant hideout was discovered during the operation.

Early Sunday, a combined team of Jammu and Kashmir Police, Indian Army, and paramilitary forces surrounded Sagam village in Anantnag following intelligence about militants in the vicinity.

While closing in on the target, the militants opened fire in an attempt to escape the cordon. The security forces retaliated, leading to a gunfight.

“Encounter has begun in Andwan Sagam area of Anantnag. Police and security forces are on the scene. More details to come,” tweeted J-K Police.

Authorities mentioned that the operation could be prolonged due to the area’s dense forest cover.
