India is committed to helping find a solution to the Ukraine crisis, stated External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday. He emphasized that India urged Moscow to ensure the safety of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine during increased fighting near the facility.

Jaishankar, visiting New Zealand for the first time as External Affairs Minister, discussed with Simon Bridges, CEO of Auckland Business Chamber, the varying reactions of different countries and regions to global issues. He noted that diverse perspectives lead to different responses based on individual viewpoints, interests, historical experiences, and insecurities.

Acknowledging the unique viewpoints of countries, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of respecting other nations’ threat perceptions, anxieties, and equities in Ukraine. He expressed India’s willingness to take actions in the interest of both India and the world, citing past instances where India addressed concerns raised by other countries or the United Nations.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station in Ukraine is highlighted as the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Jaishankar mentioned India’s role in pressing Russia on safety concerns at the plant during a meeting between Indian Prime Minister and Russian President in Astana.

Discussing India’s aspiration to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Jaishankar emphasized the need for collective action to address global challenges. He also touched on issues of climate change, discriminatory policies during the Covid pandemic, and the neglect of certain regions in global decision-making.

On the topic of New Zealand’s ties with India, Jaishankar emphasized the practical opportunities for collaboration, particularly in business, education, digital cooperation, climate, security, and regional well-being. He highlighted the importance of growing business collaboration without the need for formal trade agreements.

Addressing the current global challenges, Jaishankar stressed the importance of countries coming together to find solutions. He cited India’s efforts during the pandemic to provide vaccines to countries in need, emphasizing the importance of collaborative approaches for the betterment of regions like the Indo-Pacific.

In response to a question about the binary view in the world, Jaishankar argued that the view is outdated and highlighted the shifting dynamics of global power distribution. He mentioned the changing approach of the US towards working with countries outside traditional alliances, pointing to initiatives like the QUAD involving countries like India.
