“IAF Logistics: Ready for High-Intensity Operations”

Estimated read time 2 min read

The Indian Air Force (IAF) must be prepared for intense and brief operations at a moment’s notice, as well as be ready for short swift wars and long standoffs, such as the one in Eastern Ladakh, according to Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari. Speaking at a logistics management conference in the IAF, Chaudhari emphasized the need for the IAF to adapt to high-intensity operations with minimal build-up time, which would require significant changes in operational logistics.

Chaudhari highlighted the challenges of logistics support in such scenarios, given the Air Force’s extensive and diverse inventory. He suggested the re-evaluation of demand forecasting methods and stocking philosophies, emphasizing the importance of a serviceability-linked inventory management system and flexible stocking policies. Additionally, he recommended reviewing procurement strategies to reduce lead time for supplies and prevent supply chain obsolescence.

Chaudhari’s remarks come amidst concerns about spare parts availability due to the ongoing war and Russia’s delivery capabilities. He stressed the importance of implementing an optimal hub and spoke stocking philosophy to address all contingencies while balancing logistical flexibility.

In the context of short swift wars and prolonged standoffs like in Eastern Ladakh, Chaudhari emphasized the need for resources bridging and transportation preparedness. He proposed formalizing an integrated road and rail management plan to alleviate congestion during contingencies, suggesting increased containerization and civilian wide-bodied aircraft usage.

Chaudhari also called for a focused action plan to indigenize critical components, advocating for the adoption of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain, and the Internet of Things tailored to supply chain requirements.
