Central “Decline in Death Registrations in India: Insights from Uttar Pradesh and Other States in 2020”

Estimated read time 2 min read

The trend of increasing death registrations in India continued in 2020, with Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous state, experiencing a significant drop. Despite the expected rise in total deaths due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Uttar Pradesh registered 8.73 lakh deaths in 2020, down from 9.44 lakh in 2019, according to data from the Civil Registration System (CRS).

Other states like Kerala, Telangana, and Uttarakhand also saw a decrease in death registrations in 2020 compared to the previous year. Telangana had an 11% decline, while Uttar Pradesh saw a 7.5% fall. However, Uttar Pradesh’s decline is more noteworthy due to its already low level of death registrations.

In states with high registration levels, the actual number of death registrations corresponds closely with the number of deaths. In states with low registration levels, registrations can increase even if there are fewer deaths than the previous year.

In 2019, an estimated 14.9 lakh people died in Uttar Pradesh, with 9.44 lakh deaths registered. The number of Covid-related deaths in the state was 8,364 in 2020, contributing to the expected increase in total deaths for that year. Delhi and Telangana also saw surprising trends in death registrations in 2020.

The Covid-19 pandemic likely impacted certain types of deaths, such as those from road accidents or industrial mishaps, but the specific numbers have not been quantified yet. Telangana had 25,000 fewer death registrations in 2020 compared to 2019, while Kerala saw a decline of 19,584. Telangana recorded 1,544 Covid deaths in 2020, while Kerala had 3,120.
