G20 Summit: Managing VVIP Carcades in New Delhi

Estimated read time 2 min read

As the leaders of 19 countries, the European Union, and numerous other international organizations arrive in New Delhi, security agencies are faced with the question of how many vehicles should be allowed in the motorcade for each guest country.

It has been reported that the US proposed to bring 75-80 vehicles, while China planned for 46 vehicles. Additionally, representatives from Turkey, the UAE, the European Union, and France intend to bring their own cars.

To address the potential logistical challenges posed by these convoys, the Indian Police has suggested that the US and China reduce the number of vehicles. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has communicated this proposal to the guest countries.

Following multiple discussions, the US has agreed to limit their vehicles to 60, while negotiations with China are ongoing. However, sources suggest that this number may still be too high, recommending that the US reduce their vehicles to 25 and China to about 20.

The carcade issue was discussed at a coordination meeting to review preparedness and security arrangements for VVIPs ahead of the G20. The meeting, chaired by the chief of protocol of the MEA, included officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, MEA, Intelligence Bureau, and other stakeholders.

Based on security and logistical considerations, the MEA has identified 16 hotels across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) to accommodate delegates for the G20 Summit.
