Central “Debate Over Hippocratic Oath Replacement: TMC MP Dr Santanu Sen’s Insights”

Estimated read time 2 min read

TMC MP Dr. Santanu Sen discusses the National Medical Commission’s proposal to replace the Hippocratic Oath with Charak Shapath with Kaunain Sheriff M.

The confusion within the medical community regarding the proposal to replace the Hippocratic Oath with Charak Shapath prompted me to raise this issue. The tradition of taking the oath during graduation ceremonies is longstanding and should not be abruptly discontinued.

Are you involved in official medical forums? Have you discussed this issue with the NMC?

Yes, I have discussed this issue with the chairman and president of the medical education board of the NMC before bringing it up in Parliament. The IMA later criticized the proposal to replace the Hippocratic Oath with Charak Shapath.

Why do you think the proposal sparked controversy?

The proposal was controversial because MBBS doctors have been battling mixopathy for a long time. The decision to replace the Hippocratic Oath was seen as promoting mixopathy, which should not be politicized in the medical field.

Do you believe the government will make Charak Shapath mandatory?

The Health Minister assured me that taking Charak Shapath will be optional and not mandatory. My personal opinion is that both Ayurveda doctors and MBBS students should have the choice to uphold their respective traditions. Nothing should be imposed forcefully.
