Central Take Action Now to Reduce Road Accidents in India!

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari expressed concern about road accidents, noting that India has the highest number of fatalities in such incidents worldwide. According to the World Road Statistics (WRS) 2018 report by the International Road Federation in Geneva, India ranks third in terms of the number of accidents. Additionally, India is ranked first in terms of fatalities and third in terms of injuries resulting from road accidents.

Furthermore, statistics show that 69.80% of road accident fatalities in 2020 involved individuals between 18 and 45 years old. In response to a query, Gadkari mentioned plans for the development of 22 new highways, including 5 expressways totaling 2,485 km and 17 access-controlled highways spanning 5,816 km, with estimated costs of Rs. 1,63,350 crore and Rs. 1,92,876 crore respectively.

Gadkari also highlighted the progress on the construction of three sections of the Expressway, namely Delhi to Dausa to Lalsot (Jaipur) (214 km), Vadodara to Ankleshwar (100 km), and Kota to Ratlam to Jhabua (245 km), scheduled for completion by March 2023. Regarding FASTags, the minister explained that they are issued to vehicle users based on their Vehicle Registration Number or Chassis Number. As of March 30, 2022, banks have issued a total of 4,95,20,949 FASTags, with a penetration rate of approximately 96.5% at fee plazas on National Highways.
