India has decided to temporarily relocate its embassy from the violence-hit Sudanese capital city of Khartoum to Port Sudan due to the current security situation in the African country. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced this on Tuesday.

“In light of the security situation in Sudan, including attacks in Khartoum city, it has been decided that the Indian Embassy in Khartoum will be temporarily relocated to Port Sudan,” stated the MEA. The situation will be continuously assessed in response to further developments.

Port Sudan, a port city on the Red Sea in eastern Sudan, is approximately 850 km away from Khartoum. India has been utilizing military aircraft and naval ships from Port Sudan to evacuate its citizens from Sudan.

The Indian embassy in Khartoum is situated near the airport, an area that has experienced significant conflict. In recent days, Indian officials have been working tirelessly to evacuate Indian nationals.

No Indian officials reside in the embassy complex due to the ongoing fighting. They have been operating from other locations for safety reasons. Under “Operation Kaveri,” India has been evacuating its citizens from conflict zones in Khartoum and other troubled areas to Port Sudan, where they are then transported to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, using Indian Air Force aircraft and Navy ships.

From Jeddah, the Indian citizens are further repatriated either by commercial flights or Indian Air Force aircraft. Separate control rooms have been set up in Jeddah and Port Sudan by India.

The MEA provided contact information for the Embassy: +249 999163790; +249 119592986; +249 915028256 and E-mail: [email protected].
