On the campaign trail in Mizoram, where the state legislative assembly election is underway, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that the recent ethnic violence is not connected to any political party.

The election in Mizoram is overshadowed by the crisis in Manipur, where the Kuki-Zomi community is in conflict with the Meitei community. The Mizos have shown support by sheltering over 12,000 displaced people from the Kuki-Zomi community.

Addressing a rally in Siaha, Singh urged the communities in Manipur to come together and resolve the violence. He emphasized the importance of dialogue over violence to overcome the trust deficit that exists.

Singh has not visited Manipur since the conflict began on May 3. The Kuki-Zomi community in Manipur is demanding a separate administration, expressing distrust in the current government.

Both the Congress and the Mizo National Front are leveraging the Manipur crisis to gain public support. The MNF is banking on Mizo nationalism and support for refugees, while the Congress is criticizing the BJP for posing a threat to Mizo society.

Singh cautioned against politicizing the situation in Manipur, urging the people to stay away from negative politics. He also spoke at rallies in Siaha and Mamit, focusing on minority community populations to expand BJP’s presence in the state.

Prime Minister Modi’s rally in Mizoram was cancelled, a move linked to the situation in Manipur by the Congress.
