The Indian Navy successfully evacuated a Bulgarian sailor who was injured during a pirate attack on a Malta-flagged vessel off the coast of Somalia, as reported by news agency PTI.

The sailor was one of 18 crew members on the cargo ship and was wounded in the pirate gunfire. He was safely evacuated by the frontline ship INS Kochi for medical treatment. An official quoted by PTI stated, “The Indian Navy provided assistance in evacuating the injured crew member from the hijacked vessel MV Ruen early Monday morning.”

The injured crew member, who remained stable, sustained injuries during the piracy incident. While he received medical care onboard the ship, it was decided that he needed urgent medical attention beyond the ship’s capabilities, so he was transferred ashore in Oman.

Indian Navy spokesperson Commander Vivek Madhwal emphasized the Navy’s commitment to helping mariners in distress at sea.

In response to a distress call, the Indian Navy deployed an aircraft and a warship to aid a Malta-flagged vessel hijacked in the Arabian Sea. The maritime patrol aircraft conducted surveillance missions in the area, while the warship, on anti-piracy patrol in the Gulf of Aden, located and assisted MV Ruen.

According to the Navy statement, the aircraft spotted the hijacked vessel on December 15 and continued to monitor its movement towards the coast of Somalia. The Naval warship intercepted MV Ruen on the morning of December 16.
